In my high school my cousin introduced me to computers. And he briefly explain the difference between CPU and GPU. The only think he said was, this box runs on a chip called CPU and if you want to play the games then you have to buy one more chip called GPU.
I never bought GPU because I was never a gaming head except playing here and there. Cut short to my PhD. We uses high performance computers(HPC) for our highly mathematically intensive computer calculations based simulations. And then people around me starts saying that there is something called GPU which increases the performance of the code even further.
At the back of my head I had an idea about what my cousin told me but due to some weird reason it strikes to me the GPU in “HPC GPU in Grad School” and “Gaming GPU Told by my Cousin” are not same. And I broke that illusion or “Killed the Dog according to Jim Carry”(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V80-gPkpH6M) by reading an article today[1].
This is not a very technical explanation but good enough to give you an overhead idea.
